Ways to Hang Obsidian Needles

Hanging obsidian for wind chimes etc. is the most common way people use them, and there are a few ways to go about it. I’m not going to address drilling holes here because most people don't have the equipment, it's tricky to do, and you are guaranteed break some smaller needles anyway. This is the best way I have found to hang them without a ton of effort or investing in tools to drill them. I cut 3 or 4 notches around the top end with a Dremel and a diamond cutting wheel. Then I make a loop in some fishing line and snug it down into the notches. Done properly they will never fall off. A tiny dot of hot glue, E6000 or other adhesive on the knot isn't a bad idea if they're going to hang outdoors. If you're using thin monofilament fishing line it doesn't look any different from drilled holes.

To hang them get some good fishing line at a sporting goods store or online, the absolute best is “fluorocarbon tippet” sold for fly fishing. It isn't exactly cheap but it's incredibly thin and strong, and there's more than enough for a dozen chimes on a spool. I use 4x "fly fishing tippet" which is almost invisible to my tired old eyes. 5x would probably be better. You can go down to 7x which is essentially invisible but I wouldn't use it if the chimes may get knocked around. Get the cheapest tippet, it's all the same stuff so the brand doesn't matter.

Look up a uni-knot for tying flies onto the tippet (there's a good tutorial here)., it's easy to tie once you get the hang of it (I can tie it in the dark) and will never break or come loose. Again a tiny dab of hot glue or epoxy adhevie (I like E6000) will insure that the knot will never come loose.

If they don’t hang in the orientation you want them to be in, you can center the line with a dot of hot glue, epoxy or adhesive of your choice on the top of the needle. Also, for the “slender” size needles you can probably get away with epoxying the line directly to the top of the needle.
