Materials for Knappers and Obsidian Needles

(and obsidian lovers in general!)

ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS ARE ANSEWERED HERE. If you have a question about ordering see this section. Please note: I have a minimum order of $25 before shipping charges.

I get an order at least once a week for less than $25. If you do this, I will ask you if you want to buy more material or get a refund of your payment.

I will not, under any circumstances, ship anything international. The rates are now ridiculous as of the 1/27/13 price increase. If you aren't a US citizen and you can give me a US address to ship to that's OK.

PLEASE READ
By ordering from this site you are agreeing to all the stated policies on the linked page.

I accept electronic payments or credit cards via PayPal only! If you have a PayPal account, would like to set up an account, or would like to use their one-time transfer feature without signing up for an account, please feel free to try the shopping cart by clicking the cart button next to each item. I will bill S&H charges to your PayPal account once I have your order ready to ship. You MUST unblock cookies and popups for the PayPal site to work!

If you pick up your rocks here I can accept credit and debit cards.

Shipping and handling charges are approximately $11.50 per 15 lbs. (medium flat rate priority mail box) or $15.00 per 25 lbs. (large flat rate priority mail box). Shipping rates for light packages under a couple pounds (depending on where you are) are generally less that $11.50.

You MUST allow cookies and popups for the PayPal site to work! (I get complaints that Paypal is "broken" at least once a week. It is ALWAYS because your web browser and/or firewall is blocking information from Paypal)

You MUST have a valid email address to use PayPal!

I will ignore orders from invalid email addresses (yes this happens, believe it or not)! You DO NOT NEED A PAYPAL ACCOUNT to use PayPal! If you choose to pay via eCheck, I will wait for it to clear before starting on your order.

Do not ever email anyone your credit card number! If someone asks you for it, they are attempting to steal it! If you email me your credit card number, it will likely be stolen since one of tens of thousands of crooks will probably intercept any email that looks like it has a credit card number in it. I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway, that's what PayPal is for.

Under "Quantity" please put the number of POUNDS for rough, the number of SQUARE INCHES for slabs. In your note, specify any details like minimum size of slabs. I will calculate S&H charges and bill you once we get the order squared away.

SOLD OUT means I have none. Please do not click on the Cart button if the Available Quantity says SOLD OUT. Please do not order more than the quantity available. Please pay attention to the size of the rough. I will not cut down my rough to accomodate small quantities.

If you prefer to pay with a money order or cashier's check, email me with your order at the address below. No personal checks accepted, for any reason.

Obsidian & Needles

My obsidian is usually slabbed about 1/4" thick +/- 1/16" - it can be slabbed thicker for a litttle extra. Slabs are shaped as they come from the saw. Slabs can be from 1'' x 2" to about 4" x 4" for most material. Starred materials occasionally come in pieces large enough to get up to about 5x8" slabs, but PLEASE ask about larger rough and slabs before ordering!

Starred materials (*) are occasionally available in sizes greater than 4x4"; all others are usually not available larger than 4x4"! SOLD OUT means I have none. Really. Please do not click on the Cart button if the Available Quantity says SOLD OUT. Slabs are sold by the square inch. For example, a 4"x4" slab is 16 square inches.

If the Rough is available and Slabs say SOLD OUT check back often, I slab more as I get the time!

Materials marked with an asterisk * are occasionally available in sizes greater than 4x4"; all others are usually not available larger than 6x6"!
Please note: For sheen, rainbow, purple, and velvet obsidian, I pick slabs or rough that shows the sheen, on at least one side for slabs, in full sunlight. It may or may not show well or at all in indirect sunlight, incandescent, or fluorescent light, depending on the type of sheen and the individual piece. Also, if you work the material, and the sheen disappears, chalk it up to experience! This happens to everyone, myself included. I have no way of knowing what you will do with the material.
You can try to score and break the slabs if you want preforms for knapping (I recommend a tile cutter), or cut them with a trim or tile saw.

Please note: I have a minimum order of $25 before shipping charges which will be billed later.

ABOUT MY OBSIDIAN NEEDLES:

Everyone seems to expect a different thing when they order needles from me. I dig these needles myself, and the needles I sell are larger than 2" to 10" and longer and can be black, mahogany colored, or mixed clear, black and mahogany. The needles that I dig are needle-shaped; i.e. they have one or two pointed ends and are not too fat in the middle (except for the big fat needles sold separately). Other than that they vary tremendously in thickness and length! I have seen a lot of obsidian shards (and what appears to be glass!) passed off as needles online. Long/thin chunks of obsidian and glass that resemble actual obsidian needles (which only occur in significant quantities in nature at Davis Creek, California and nowhere else in the world, AFAIK), and cut or ground pieces (yes, really) or flakes of obsidian are NOT obsidian needles! My needles are mined at the source, by me, and I guarantee that they are really obsidian needles and not some other junk. There aren't too many websites that make this promise (again, as far as I know).

I grab a handful from my stock and weigh it when you order from me, so you will get needles from more than 2" (the smallest I keep) to exactly 4" (regular size), more than 4" to exactly 6" (large size), more than 6" to exactly 8" (jumbo size), and more than 8" to exactly 10" (giant size). Needles larger than 10" are sold by the INCH ($1.00/inch, a real bargain compared to rock show prices) so ASK about these and I'll check my stock.

If you think my prices are a bit high, most of the needles I have seen for sale on the net are of questionable pedigree at ridiculous prices: Check out the truly astonishing prices on the (mostly junky) needles on EBAY then come back here and order ACTUAL needles for a REASONABLE price! As of 2014, I appear to be the ONLY person on the net selling needles by the pound outside of Ebay. Finally, please do not ask for needles of such-and-such a length and shape. High-grading my stock is not fair to the rest of my customers. If you want needles of exact dimensions, I suggest you buy them individually from someone else.

Tips on heat treating material for knapping (usually needed to knap agate, jasper, etc. Obsidian does not need to be heat treated.

A nice tutorial on knapping slabs (please don't ask any questions specifically about knapping, I am not a good resource, and pages like this exist for your use and enjoyment!)

Also check out the Yahoo group "THE TARP" HERE for answers to any question about knapping that you can think of (and many more)! I am not a knapper so I can't answer specific questions about knapping!
